Trump International Airport in Florida. This claim gained traction after excerpts of what appeared to be an internal memo to reservation agents were shared by several outlets.
However, a closer examination of United Airlines’ response indicates the situation is more nuanced than initially presented. The internal memo reportedly advised agents to “offer acceptable alternatives” for passengers uncomfortable with flying into the airport. While this phrasing led some to interpret it as a policy for free changes specifically tied to the airport’s name, United Airlines has stated that the memo was “poorly worded” and “not accurate.”
The airline clarified that its official policies do not permit free flight changes based solely on an airport’s name or designation. While United does offer flexibility in situations like schedule changes or fare adjustments, personal objections to an airport’s name are not, by themselves, grounds for a fee waiver under their standard rules.
The confusion appears to stem from the empathetic tone and phrasing of the internal communication. By encouraging agents to accommodate customer concerns, the memo may have inadvertently created the impression of a new or special exception.
