What’s True

The Tonca is a genuine annual festival held in Trento, Italy, as part of the Feste Vigiliane celebrations dedicated to the city’s patron saint. It features a satirical public trial culminating in a symbolic river dunking. A professional performer is placed inside the cage; this role was famously held for decades by Giorgio Vianini, and passed down to his daughter following his passing in 2024.

What’s False

The ritual is not an actual punitive measure where real politicians are caged and tossed into the water for making poor choices. The targets of the satire can vary widely—ranging from multiple individuals and non-politicians to symbolic concepts or entities—and the person lowered into the water is strictly a stand-in performer. Additionally, despite claims of an “icy” environment, the event takes place in June during mild weather, meaning the Adige River is far from freezing.

Social media feeds saw the resurgence of a viral legend in August 2026, alleging that an Italian municipality maintains an annual tradition of putting the politician responsible for the year’s most disastrous decision inside a cage and dropping them into freezing waters.

A post on Instagram declared, “Every year, A town in Italy locks the politician responsible for the year’s most foolish decision inside a cage and plunges them into an icy river.”

Over subsequent months, similar versions of the narrative circulated widely across major platforms like X, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, and Instagram, frequently accompanied by photographs or video clips from the festival.

At its core, the rumor stems from a genuine cultural event in Trento, a city in northern Italy. Known as the Tonca, this tradition forms part of the Feste Vigiliane festivities honoring San Vigilio (St. Vigilius). However, it is not a literal punishment inflicted on actual government officials. Rather, it is a comedic theatrical performance complete with a mock trial, and the individual lowered into the Adige River is a hired performer rather than any of the public figures being ribbed. Furthermore, while online posts frequently characterize the water as “freezing” or “icy,” meteorological data confirms that the event occurs in June under much warmer conditions, rendering such descriptions heavily exaggerated.

Because the claims mix kernels of historical fact with dramatic online exaggerations, the overall narrative is rated a mixture of true and false.

The modern festival is a theatrical throwback to historical punitive methods reportedly used in Trento between the 14th and 17th centuries, when individuals convicted of blasphemy were placed in cages and submerged in the river. Today, however, the symbolic targets can encompass multiple public figures or even abstract concepts.

The Reality Behind the River Immersion

Prior to the actual dunking each June, Trento hosts the Tribunale di Penitenza, an elaborate mock court where playful accusations, defenses, and verdicts are delivered with heavy doses of irony. The official Feste Vigiliane website explains that the event merges “theater, satire and popular participation,” noting that notable actors and comedians such as Andrea Castelli, Lucio Gardin, and Mario Cagol have traditionally fronted the production. Local journalists have similarly highlighted its comedic nature, featuring absurd charges and defenses leading up to a dramatic verdict.

The immersion happens afterward. According to the 2025 Feste Vigiliane program, once the court renders its satirical judgment, the “condemned” entity is symbolically placed into a cage and lowered into the Adige River. Rai News noted that the targets for 2025 included regional President Maurizio Fugatti—targeted over debates surrounding a third term—as well as local residents who abstained from recent elections. Yet, the person physically lowered into the water inside the cage was Tania Vianini, acting strictly “come figurante” (as a performer or stand-in).

While viral posts paint a picture of Trento officials singling out a lone politician for a disastrous policy, the modern Tonca frequently targets “one or more people, politicians and not,” or even inanimate targets.

For example, Rai News reported that the primary target in 2023 was “the bear,” serving as a symbolic scapegoat for local frustrations in Trentino. In 2024, the list of the “toncati” featured Fugatti, Mayor Franco Ianeselli, and “extreme animal-rights activists,” according to Rai News. Local coverage from 2019 similarly pointed out that multiple politicians were judged simultaneously, demonstrating that the festival is rarely restricted to a single political figure.

The event format has also adapted to changing circumstances. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Tribunale di Penitenza was conducted online, with the coronavirus itself humorously placed among the symbolic offenders.

In the first celebration following pandemic restrictions, the traditional river dunking was temporarily replaced by a symbolic bucket-of-water version. Archival recordings spanning multiple years—including 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019—are readily accessible online.

Who Actually Goes Into the Water?

The individual lowered into the Adige is never the actual politician or public figure condemned during the mock proceedings. Official festival guidelines clarify that the condemned subject is immersed “tramite controfigura”—utilizing a stunt double or designated performer.

For nearly four decades, this role was undertaken by Giorgio Vianini, a beloved local volunteer deeply tied to the festival’s history. In a 2024 interview, Vianini mentioned that he first stepped into the cage in 1985, missing only a single event in 2010. Media tributes following his passing described him as the definitive face of the ritual—a dedicated participant who symbolically carried the community’s annual grievances.

Below is a photograph from the event’s official Facebook page featuring Giorgio Vianini in 2022:

Following Giorgio Vianini’s passing in November 2024, his daughter, Tania Vianini, stepped up to inherit the mantle. A photo from 2025 captures Tania continuing the family legacy:

Summary

Ultimately, the viral narrative is rooted in a real cultural tradition. The city of Trento genuinely hosts the Tonca festival, featuring a mock trial inspired by contemporary events where a person inside a cage is symbolically lowered into the Adige River.

However, the dramatic framing frequently attached to videos and images online is inaccurate. The trial is pure political satire rather than a punitive judicial sentence. The targets are not exclusively politicians, nor are they restricted to just one individual per year. Lastly, the person lowered into the water is a willing performer acting as a stand-in, and descriptions of the Adige River being “freezing” in June are an exaggerated embellishment.
