A photograph circulating on social media platforms, purportedly showing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth in emo attire for his senior yearbook photo, has drawn mockery and sparked debate. This image appeared shortly after Hegseth announced a new policy mandating annual testosterone screening for troops.
The viral image, which claims to be Hegseth’s senior yearbook photo from 1999, depicts him with dark clothing, side-swept bangs, and black eyeliner. It gained traction across Facebook, X, Instagram, and Threads, often linked to commentary on his recent announcement regarding troop testosterone levels.
However, a fact-check reveals the image to be fabricated. Hegseth graduated from Forest Lake Area High School in Minnesota in 1999. An examination of the school’s yearbook from that year shows Hegseth actively involved in football, basketball, and choir. He was also nominated for homecoming king and voted “Most Likely to Marry.” The yearbook entries detail his extracurricular activities, aspirations, and memories, but include no photograph resembling the viral emo image.
Furthermore, analysis of the viral photograph using OpenAI’s verifying tool detected a SynthID watermark, confirming it as an AI-generated image.
The fabricated photo’s emergence followed Hegseth’s declaration that the Pentagon will implement annual testosterone deficiency screenings for all service members over 30. The initiative aims to ensure troops maintain optimal levels for peak performance, with options for testosterone replacement therapy available for those diagnosed with a deficiency. Hegseth announced this policy in a video posted on X, emphasizing the program’s goal of enabling service members to “operate at your absolute best.”
