An image circulating online in June 2026 purports to show a screenshot from The Trump Organization’s merchandise store, allegedly selling small pieces of peeling paint from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The claim, shared across platforms like Instagram, X, Facebook, Reddit, and Bluesky, prompted inquiries about its validity. While it is true that “American flag blue” paint, applied to the reflecting pool by presidential order, had begun peeling shortly after a costly renovation, the claim that it was being sold by The Trump Organization is false.
An examination of the screenshot revealed discrepancies compared to the actual Trump Organization online store. The graphics and color scheme in the alleged screenshot do not match the legitimate website, which features a white and gold design, unlike the blue and gold theme presented in the image.
Furthermore, analysis using AI detection tools indicated that the screenshot was generated by artificial intelligence software. This was confirmed by the user who initially posted the image, who admitted to creating it using ChatGPT for satirical purposes. They provided a screenshot of their prompt, which explicitly requested a “satirical ad.” However, because the image was initially shared without any indication of parody, it has been classified as fake.
The fabricated screenshot emerged as other social media users posted their own alleged pieces of peeling paint from the reflecting pool. The authenticity of these other shared photos has not been verified.
