A photograph circulating online in June 2026 showed the White House in what appeared to be a state of significant disrepair. Users on social media platforms shared the image, with some lamenting the condition of the historic building and attributing its state to actions by U.S. President Donald Trump.
However, the claim that the photograph depicts the White House itself undergoing demolition is misleading. While the image is authentic and shows part of the White House grounds, it has been cropped to exclude the main presidential residence, which remained intact.
The photograph actually captures the construction site adjacent to the original White House building. This site is where a new ballroom is being built to replace the East Wing, which was demolished in the fall of 2025 under a directive from President Trump. Wider-angle photographs of the area reveal the main White House structure standing to the west of the construction zone, appearing unaffected.
A broader view, taken on July 10, 2026, confirms that the presidential residence was intact while construction continued to its east. This wider shot also shows the progress of a new granite helipad on the South Lawn, as confirmed by Trump earlier that month.
Snopes has previously investigated claims related to the demolition of the East Wing and the construction of the new ballroom, including rumors about the materials used.
