The accusation appears to have originated in April 2026 from independent journalist Ethan Levins, who posted on X (formerly Twitter) that “Apple has removed Lebanese village names in Southern Lebanon.” Other social media accounts and the Instagram account for the Gaza Freedom Flotilla also spread the claim, describing it as “erasure” and stating that “Apple has erased almost all towns and villages in Lebanon on Maps.”
However, these claims lack evidence. Those propagating the rumor did not provide any proof that the labels were present on Apple Maps before Israel’s strikes in 2026. In fact, Apple Maps has historically had sparse coverage in Lebanon. A screenshot from August 2020, taken by a Snopes reporter, demonstrates this limited coverage, showing no town names south of the coastal city of Tyre.
This sparse detail in Lebanon contrasts with the extensive labeling on Apple Maps for areas within Israel, including numerous small northern towns. Furthermore, Google Maps provides labels for several towns and villages in southern Lebanon.
